Absalon Hotel Copenhagen

4.8 out of 5.0 stars

Colourful, Trendy with Great Staff, Breakfast & Handy Location

A classy boutique hotel. Located in a prime position, a short distance away from Copenhagen central railway station, in Vesterbro, southwest of the city centre and close to the old “meatpacking district”, the hippest, trendiest place currently in Copenhagen.

The hotel is positioned on a street corner with other hotels close by. Across the street there’s a sex shop. It’s part and parcel of Northern Europe and Scandinavia, so don’t be put off by this, it can easily be ignored. My kids had a laugh the few times we went past.

Our room for four, two adults and a 12 and 14 year old, was on the fourth floor facing the internal courtyard. Windows flanked two sides of the room. The other buildings around the courtyard were hotels as well. It meant externally the place was reasonably quiet. Also any noise from the outside corridor was kept away from the sleeping area by a long hallway and the bathroom.

We had a Queen bed, very comfortable. Sleep quality was very good. The only drawback, the kids had to sleep together in a sofa bed. It wasn’t the largest sofa we’ve seen. Not roomy enough or the most comfortable for them.

Since the weather was on the cool side but not cold, we had the windows open occasionally. I didn’t see if there was any air conditioning, there were no air ducts, but there was heating for the colder months. So cannot comment how the place feels in full summer, probably a fan and open windows will do the job.

The bathroom was nice and bright and spacious. The hand held shower was in the tub. No bidet. In the hallway was a built-in wardrobe. A fat screen TV fixed to the wall sat above the desk. Below a small fridge, perfect for keeping a snack or drink cold. There were also three cartons of complementary water. They could be used to make tea or coffee in a Nespresso machine supplied. Power points were enough for charging the devices we had and the WiFi was very good.

Breakfast was ample, a lot to choose from: coffee, tea, milk, juices, cereals, breads, pastries, fruit salad, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cold cuts, cheeses, pre-cooked omelettes, sausages, tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum for a salad and more. There were two areas where food was dispensed, one close to the bar and the other on the opposite side of the dining area. Plenty of room where to sit comfortably in enjoyable surroundings. It felt good to have breakfast there. Also there were a good number of armchairs and sofas in the lobby on both sides of the reception.

The staff there were pleasant and welcoming. Also wonderful bar staff for an evening cocktail or beer. A great attribute for a hotel. Reception check-in and check-out quick and efficient. Luggage storage in a separate locked room if you require to come back after check-out or very early check-in.

The hotel is relatively pricey. Denmark in general is expensive compared to most European countries, except for Iceland and its Scandinavian neighbours which are more expensive. But the location and service make up for it.

One piece of advice: the room we had would have been perfect for a couple wanting extra space with the use of a sofa instead of a second bed. The other doubles were a little smaller from what I saw. Of course it depends on how intimate you want to be. Absalon, is one of the best hotels we’ve been to and it’s a place I wouldn’t mind visiting again one day, better solo or as a couple if booking one room…of course.

Note: The Front Office & Guest Relations explained to me there is a Family Room option. It’s available for four people travelling together. They also have some double rooms with connecting doors, which could be another solution to both living together and getting some privacy at other times. This can be requested upon booking. I certainly will keep this in mind for next time. Thank you Absalon.
