Old, Tired but a Winner for Price, Staff, Food and Location
Located on Victoria Street in the Bras Basah district and just south of Bugis between the MRT Stations of Bras Basah and Bugis, the hotel is in walking distance of food outlets, shopping malls and cultural centres. In Victoria, Albert and Queen Streets, restaurants, eateries and hawker centres. Shopping in Bugis Village, and malls Bugis Plus, Bugis Junction and Raffles City. For arts, heritage and culture, the Singapore Art Museum, National Museum of Singapore and the National Library. Also at one block away the iconic Raffles Hotel and Long Bar, famous for the original Singapore Sling cocktail.
This was my second stay at the Grand Pacific. Previously visiting in mid-June 2015 while in transit. This time stayed 5 nights mid October 2016 in a double room. My daughter stayed with me as well. The room was 603 on the sixth floor facing Victoria Street.
The Grand Pacific is an older hotel. The room furniture, fixtures, carpets, fridge and bathroom have seen better days. If you can overlook this, you’ll find no real issues to complain.
The beds were comfortable with firm mattresses. Cleaning of the room gets done everyday if you ask or require it. I decided it wasn’t necessary. You can ask just for clean towels, shampoo, etc., if you prefer.
For entertainment there was a large flat screen TV that sat above a cabinet incorporating the fridge. TV reception on some channels wasn’t very good and the selection of English language channels was restricted to the local Singaporean TV and main worldwide news channels, such BBC, CNN, etc.
The air conditioning worked well and was adjustable. There were limited power outlets and all required a Singapore adaptor if you wanted to use or charge a device.
The highlight was the breakfast. The buffet had a large selection suited to both Asian and Western tastes. If you like omelets there is a chef just for that. This time round it was Isaac, is available to make you one.
Staff at reception, at the door and the bell hops and waiters at the restaurant were all very courteous. No one was ever rude.
Met an older couple that has been coming to Singapore for the last 26 years and have stayed here on many of those occasions. They were happy. Would I come back to this hotel? Like this couple, probably yes. The competitive price, courteous staff, breakfast and location are all great reasons to stay here.
