Good Modern Hotel in Prime Transport Location
If you want handy public transport and don’t mind a sterile location – not in the heart of older more charming Amsterdam but in modern office surrounds – the Meininger Amsterdam West is in the perfect spot.
Coming and going to Schiphol Airport, getting around Amsterdam or the surrounding countryside is easy from Sloterdijk. I chose Meininger for this reason, its location. Sloterdijk Station is a short walk (about 150 metres) from the hotel. Two stops from the airport and one stop to Amsterdam Centraal.
We visited Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Den Haag (The Hague) and Rotterdam by train from here. If we had more time we would’ve visited Utrecht and a few other places. Outside the station you also have buses, the Metro line and a tram line.
The hotel itself is rather modern and inspired by IKEA. A hotel for the younger generation. In fact, the majority of guests where teenagers and young adults, but of course with a few older guests too. During our stay the Rolling Stones had a concert at the Arena. So we had a few fans in party mode too.
We stayed four nights at the end of September, early October and had booked to include a night before our morning arrival so we could have breakfast and a sleep-in before sightseeing. We travelled as a family of four, two adults and children of 12 and 14.
Our room was of the smaller size and would’ve preferred a little more space for storing our luggage. We managed however. To sleep we had a queen bed and a bunk bed for the kids. The mattresses were on the hard side but comfortable. The bunks had a light housing on the side wall in an awkward spot. The kids complained a few times it was in their way bumping their arms or heads.
The air temperature was stable all way through and controlled by the in room control panel. Rooms were tidied if you desired. Towels were changed every day, but you can use them again by hanging them up if you are environmentally concerned. The shower was spacious and clean. The toilet is separate. An external hand basin with mirror is in between the two.
Breakfast buffet was well catered. Plenty of food to choose from, cereals, breads, cold cuts, cheeses, preserved fruit, yoghurt, jam, butter, including a few local spreads, profiteroles, juices and hot drinks. The breakfast room was very large with pelnty of benches and tables. If you wanted to prepare, cook or heat up your own food, you could do so in a small kitchen with all the facilities available: oven, microwave, pots, pans and utensils, sink, etc. It also had its own eating area. Very handy. After breakfast cleaning after yourself was encouraged. Plates, utensils and glasses taken to the washing up area.
There’s also a bar next door with Heineken on tap and spirits and liqueurs. Great spot to have a break and unwind.
WiFi is free and worked well. You could have as many devices connected as you wanted. The kids were on there most of the time when in the room, they were happy.
The experience? Nice staff. Check-in and check-out was reasonably quick. We also booked a canal cruise at the concierge. The price cheaper than elsewhere. No real complaints, so overall it was a good stay. Would I consider coming back? Yes, I would. Without the kids of course and try out a single or a double.
