Good Consistent Service on Older Metal

Singapore Airlines is my go to airline for travel to Rome FCO. I fly there with SIA once or twice a year and they have never let me down. Their cabin service in Economy has always been top notch and consistent.

On this route: Singapore, Rome and vice versa they fly the Boeing 777-200ER. One of the older planes in their fleet. The B777 holds up reasonably well considering the seats and in-flight entertainment system (IFE) have seen better days. The seats are on the hard side (but compensated by using the cushion supplied) but are roomy in regards to width, pitch and configuration, which is the classic 3-3-3.

SIA and a handful of other airlines still use this layout. Many others have or are considering the seating as 3-4-3. The only real issue in the cabin is the placement of the entertainment box under one of the three seats. You can avoid the box but you’ll need to place your feet on a slight angle. Many other airlines have this issue too.

The B777 is still a great plane even though it isn’t the quietest. A newer Airbus A350 would be nice on this service, but that won’t happen until SIA have upgraded all the other main European destinations first.

Update: SIA have now been flying the Airbus A350-900 on this route. As mentioned in my review it was only a matter of time when SIA was satisfied with other European routes getting their upgrades that Rome too would get the A350. Singapore Airlines’ A350-900 to FCO is configured in three classes: Business, Premium Economy and Economy.
