Snippets: Economy Pax Upgrade Forces Flight Turn Back

Flight turns back after economy passengers upgrade themselves…

A couple of Economy Class passengers decided to move into Business Class. A standoff ensued with cabin crew and the captain was forced to return the flight to its departure point where those passengers were subsequently arrested by police. The writer goes on asking, “Who even thinks they can self-upgrade?” He then makes some fair comments about the self-righteous and then asks, “Who does get upgraded?” Explaining that airlines don’t upgrade economy passengers just because there are empty seats, it’s the frequent flyers with status that do or you pay at check-in. No sweet deals. “What if economy class is full but not business?” Here he’s spot on explaining the rules with upgrades with platinum or gold status flyers or those that have paid the highest fare get the nod. Lastly he ends with “The steal you can get away with”, saying why weren’t those two self-upgraders smarter? There were empty seats they could have appropriated and laid down on. He explains that timing is important when changing seats and grabbing entire rows. All good but when he mentions about throwing things onto seats to show they are yours there are questions.

The idea about throwing all your stuff across a row of middle three or four is not a good one. Someone will take the aisle seat regardless what you do if they know those seats were empty beforehand. It’s better to have an empty seat next to you than someone climbing over you etc., so you can’t start arguing if someone else has the same idea. Sitting in the middle three to take all of them is a better proposition. I’ve scored a row of four only once on a A330. An overnight flight that wasn’t full so it was easy. As for the upgrade to Business Class in the article. I also believe the compnay has every right to stop people upgrading unless the staff makes the decision that could be based on your spend, status or condition. If you are nice to them it is always possible to get a perk from Business Class.

Anyhow there were some good pointers in this article. Pity my comment wasn’t published. It must be they don’t like my suggestions.
